When it comes to running gear, there are so many choices to make. What brand of shoes do you need? What style of outfit looks best? Or, which accessories to get? When you first start out running, it’s hard to decide exactly what you’ll need versus what’s a luxury or just nice to have! There are so many companies out there ready to part you with your hard earned money, how do you know what’s really worth spending your money on?
Last week, I posted an article about Free Resources for Beginner Runners. This week, I have a list of 5 items you should definitely splurge on right now even if you are just starting out.
Splurge #1. Running Shoes
First and foremost, you need good shoes. There are sooo many shoes out there, it’s really overwhelming. I suggest going to your local running shop and let the experts help you pick your shoe. The one I go to will do an assessment and recommend several pairs that will suit your running style. Good shoes don’t come cheap, but this one item is the most important one for running. It could help protect you from injury. Currently, I’m running in the Nike Free 5.o, but next time I might looking into a new brand or style of shoe.
Splurge #2. Sign up for a Race
For me, signing up for races is the single, biggest motivator. I set my sights on a race about 8 weeks away, create a training plan (using the miCoach App) and stick to it. I don’t want to fail myself, so I do my very best to push myself hard and to complete all the workouts. If it weren’t for the races, I’m not sure that I would be so diligent at sticking to my plan. Last year, I did 2 races, but this year, I already did 2, and have another 2 or 3 more planned before September.
Splurge #3. Running App on Smart Phone/GPS Watch
If you need one thing to keep you motivated while out on a run, a running app on your Smartphone will do the trick. It’s so much more motivating to have technology that will calculate distance and speed for you as well as track your progress. If you have a smart phone already, it won’t be much a splurge since there are plenty of free running apps such as miCoach, Nike Running and Runtastic. Plus, your smartphone will have music, which is also a very important motivator. If you have a smart phone, you will also want to have some kind of arm band such as my Avantree TrackPouch. You’ll get tired of holding it in your hands, especially on long runs. Update: I purchased the Garmin Vivo Active smart watch and I love training with it.
Splurge #4. Great Headphones or earbuds
I love listening to music when I run, it’s very motivating. The longer the run, the more I feel I need music to keep me on track. Lately, my earphones have been my biggest annoyance. I’m using the standard ear buds that came with my iPhone and they keep falling out, especially from my right ear. I would love to have a good pair of earphone such as the skullcandy as opposed to ear buds so that they would stay on my head. I think a pair of blue tooth ones that would do away with a bouncing cord would be great as well but they are so expensive.
Splurge #5. Body Glide
Bodyglide Womens Anti-Blister & Anti-Chafing Balm – 22.68g $9.99
For the first 2 years of running, Body glide or any other anti-chaffing products wouldn’t have made my list but now that I am running longer distances (10 km or longer) in warmer weather, I really need this. I went for a long run this week and came home with chaffing under my arms and between my thighs (#RunnerProblems).
Ok, there you have it, a list of 5 items that are worth spending your precious money on if you are serious about taking up running and changing your lifestyle. Tell me, what running items do you feel runners should definitely splurge on?
