On today’s post, I have guest blogger Paul from ezcompression.com who will answer the following question; can the right gear make you a better runner?
Running has come a long way since the human evolution. We now no longer run for survival, but for pleasure or fitness. Over the past years we have seen many new running technologies from the major manufacturers.
Some of these can be truly beneficial to your running objective. Take apps for example, you can now track how much you run every week. You can also track the pace, the burnt calories and even the weather conditions. This type of data can benefit you in a single area: growth.
There are countless studies showing that running and exercising regularly will develop your body`s ability to perform better and longer. So if you have a few years of running behind you, you might be well beyond your initial starting point. You can now run longer, faster, better with lower risk of injuries.
So what kind of equipment is needed to push yourself further and improve your overall running experience?
Sneakers or running shoes have made huge progresses over the past decade. Runners can now find custom shoes reducing the impact on leg joints such as the knee. Major manufacturers have also started using newer technologies and we now have sneakers made from 100% recycled ocean plastic which are just as good as regular sneakers.
There are thousands of running apps. Depending on your preferred system (iOs or Android) you may find it useful to get an app to track all the essential data of your running routine. You can compare your results and see in real data how your running is progressing.
There are various options for compression gear for both men and women. Compression socks are a good option for long-distance runners who need the extra help in proper blood circulation. This is why we see many professional athletes and even football players wearing compression socks.
Compression clothing also has the role of warming up the muscles. There are studies showing the warmer muscles are less prone to accidents. Good compression clothing needs to warm-up the muscles faster than regular clothing but also to keep a good balance and not get the body heat too high to uncomfortable levels. Make sure you have a good set of compression t-shirts and shorts. Finding the best compression shorts shouldn`t be a problem.
Marathon pace bands
Larger marathons offer pace bands for runners. These wrist bands provide you with the split times and you don’t have to memorize them, especially on long runs such as marathons.
Hydration jackets have become the norm for long distance runners. They are also used by runners in remote locations. There are plenty of good models to choose from. The best jackets come with multiple pockets and hydration reservoirs. This ensure you’ll be ready to run for longer without having to stop and hydrate.
Sunglasses are one of the things runners don’t realize they need until it’s already too late. Make sure you keep your vision protected against the UV lights and get the best sunglasses you can afford. There should not be a limit on what you can spend to protect your eyes. To make things easier you can look at the major manufacturers’ options and buy them together with other running equipment.
A high visibility vest
Night runners should know the importance of a high visibility vest. Since they are cheap to buy there is no reason to skip this purchase. You need to make sure you stay safe and that drivers can see you in time. There are too many accidents involving runners each year. Make sure you buy a good high visibility vests and you can even purchase a strong light to see the possible dangers ahead of you. If you have extra pockets it’s always a good idea to carry some extra batteries.
Generally speaking you can just start running with no gear at all. This is the why humans have been doing it for thousands of years. However, things have changed. Many studies show the importance of proper hydration while running and this is why you need the gear to support this. There are also many more dangers on the road, especially for night runners and the increasing traffic in urban locations. Make sure you stay as safe as possible with reflective clothing and a light.
If you are passionate about running and you plan to do it for a longer period of time you should know you can improve things like blood flow or muscle soreness with compression clothing. The right gear won’t make you instantly better, but it can provide the stepping stone to pushing your own limits and always improving, which is what you want in the end.
