I was provided the ecoYoga mat for the purpose to review. All opinions are my own (oh, and my husband’s too).
One of the greatest things about having a blog is the great opportunities to review products. Recently I got to experience the ecoYoga mat. In this review, I’ll take you through some of the interesting fact about the ecoYoga mat, along with my personal experience and opinions.
An Earth Conscious Choice
When doing some they 20 Day sustainable challenge over a year ago, I was trying to source out sustainable clothing brands, I stumbled upon many sustainable yoga clothing (which was great to see, but not great for a professional wardrobe). The ecoYoga mat is the first brand that I’ve come across that offers a sustainable yoga mat.
Traditional yoga mats are made of PCV, a plastic that stays around relatively forever. The ecoYoga mat – an earth-conscious choice – is constructed of natural rubber and jute. It is even biodegradable. So, in 10 years from now, you’ll be able to throw it in your compost bin and know that it will return to nature.
Look & Feel
Let’s get to the fluffy stuff first, colour. I LOVE the array of colours that the mats come in, all inspired by nature. As seen below, they come in Coral Red, Ash Grey, Lichen Green, Natural, and my favorite and colour of choice, Deep Lavender. The colours themselves give you a calm and peaceful feeling don’t you think?
The mats also come in two different lengths, 72 inches and 84 inches. The mat I received was 72 inches. My husband, who is just over 6 feet himself, and I both thought that it was a good length. It’s actually several inches longer than our PVC mat we’ve been sharing for years.
Comparing it to our old PVC yoga mat, I can honestly say that I love the grip the ecoYoga mat offers. The image below shows the jute weave very well, which gives this mat the nice grip. The stippled side goes down and also offers better slip resistance then our old mat.
And a last thought on the look and feel of the ecoYoga mat, I have to also add smell. One superficial point to note is that I find the mat has a rubbery smell that seems to transfer on your hands and linger with you for a while.
The ecoYoga mat is said to last from 2 to 10 years depending how often you use it, and how well you care for it. I can’t comment on this since I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks. However, this leads into my next point, how to properly take care of the mat.
Caring For The Mat
Properly caring for the ecoYoga mat will prolong its lifespan and keep up is great grip. You can wipe it down with water and a touch of household vinegar. Alternatively, you can also machine wash it according to the instruction sheet, however it will need to hang dry.
The unfortunate thing about sustainable products is usually the price tag attached to them. The ecoYoga mat is no different. The 72 inch mat retails for $89.50 CAN, while the 84 inch mat is $96.50. I have to admit that I find the price tag high, however, that doesn’t surprise me since it’s a high quality product made with biodegradable plant materials. My values tell me to pick the ethical option, however, the pocket-book doesn’t always agree. It’s up to the individuals to weigh the value of an earth-conscious choice over its price tag.
The Yoga Mat The Whole Family Loves
The entire family had fun testing the ecoYoga mat to give this review. My husband and I overall are very satisfied with ecoYoga mat and it’s been getting a lot of use since it’s longer and has better grip than our other mat (that’s the truest testament right?). The price of an eco-conscious choice was definitely a debate that my husband and I had and we were split on the decision.
My dog Charlie and my son Brendyn didn’t offer any opinions for or against the ecoYoga mat, they just wanted to get in the action too. Here is Brendyn doing his best Downward Dog and Cobra pose, while Charlie is doing …. let’s just call it “the dog” pose.
