Pommelló , a Toronto based company, is launching their first collection of activewear – Pommelló Sweats, which gives users the benefits of hot yoga – but hold the hot room.
In my Summer Slow Down posts a few weeks ago, I alluded to this review of Pommelló. And I’m finally getting around to writing about this exciting new technology in activewear. When all other active wear companies are trying to make gear that will wick sweat away and keep you dry, you get a company like Pommello, who goes against the grain and makes athletic gear that makes you sweat!
What is Pommello Sweats?
Pommelló Sweats is a line of performance apparel developed for anyone with fitness, health, and wellness goals. The apparel works by supporting three important functions of the body: 1) encourages the lymphatic system 2) detoxes through the natural process of sweating and 3) improves athleticism through the principles of hyperthermic conditioning. (source)
Humph, ok, so what does this all mean?
Your lymphatic system takes care of ridding your body of toxins. Sweating helps speed up blood circulations, therefore encourages the release of toxins, over and above what your liver and kidneys can get rid of for you. (source). Hyperthermic conditioning is a term used to explain what happens to your body when exposed to hot temperatures. Hyperthermic conditioning has many health benefits such as: increasing your blood flow which helps you fuel your muscles more efficiently, increasing your endurance and increasing muscle gain.
To read more about hypothermic conditioning, you can read this article as it does a great job at explaining it in detail.
So, what exactly is innovative about Pommelló and why is it important to runners?
Here is what Pommelló tells us:
Pommelló Sweats’ patent-pending neoprene fabric includes titanium sheeting and a 100-percent closed cell structure technology that generates heat and increases sweating with little effort in a short amount of time. It activates the user’s lymphatic system through hyperthermic conditioning. This heat application has a few benefits: removal of impurities under the skin, increased flexibility, shorter recovery times after workout, and weight loss to name a few.
My thoughts on the Pommelló sweats
When I first put on my Pommelló Sweats I though it felt very similar to putting on a wet suit. If you’ve ever done that, you know it’s not the easiest thing to put on. I did need to put some efforts in putting on these garments as they are fairly thick in texture. I especially had some difficulties getting the top on and off, however, that didn’t intimidate me one bit.
Once on, I would say that Pommelló gear fits snuggly, but not suffocating like a wet suite, similar to compression wear. I used their sizing chart to select my size and I found it bang on with accuracy.
I took out my Pommelló Sweats outfit several time while running as well as a few outdoor yoga sessions. It’s designed to make you sweat, and I can attest that it makes you sweat, a lot! To avoid overheating, I wore my Pommello outfit early in the morning when the weather was cooler. I also made sure to stay well hydrated.
Did I notice any benefits? Well, I can’t say I lost weight testing out my Pommelló Sweats. I can say that I did notice a better range of motion when I was running since my muscles warmed up quickly.
Cautions when using Pommelló Sweats:
How to wash and care for your Pommelló Sweats?
The maker of Pommelló Sweats suggests either hand washing or laundering the garments in a laundry bag, in cold water, on the delicate setting. Natural enzyme laundry sport washes are the best way to safely clean the gear from bacteria and odour without leaving a residue. Do not put your Pommelló Sweats in the dryer. Hang dry only. To minimize the potential for creasing, they also recommend hanging on a regular clothes hanger and they also warn against folding them when storing.
I definitely enjoy using Pommelló Sweats for my workouts, however, for my longer runs, to be on the safe side, I’d definitely wear regular workout gear. It was great when doing yoga because I was able to get a good sweat when I usually don’t just doing regular yoga. I will definitely add it to my rotation of workout gear!
