It was muddy, it was difficult, but we did it as a team! The Municipal Mudders crushed Grapes of Wrath 2017 and raised $8000 for the Canadian Cancer Society!
Grapes of Wrath 2017
This wasn’t my first obstacle mud run, but this was my first time doing the Grapes of Wrath. The Grapes of Wrath 2017 is a charity run benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society. I really wasn’t sure what to expect or how to train for such an event! But honestly, when going in an event like this, I would say that the less you know, the better!
The course was 5 km long, and it ran through the property of the 13th street Winery in St. Catharines, ON, which is located on the Niagara Bench. This makes it an ideal spot for an obstacle mud run since the large property has many hills and a creek that runs right through it.
On a whim sometime in March, I decided it would be fun to gather a team of coworkers to do this run with. Little did I know that there were many adventures types at work. In total, there were 11 staff members and 3 other members that were friends and family.
We decided tackle this challenge as a team, and let me tell you, it would be very difficult, and in some cases impossible to do it without the help of our team.
The course had a total of 28 obstacles with varying levels of difficulty. Some were simply walking across logs, jumping over bales of hay, or carrying a log up and down a long hill. Others were more difficult, such as the rope ladder pictured above. The funnest obstacle was a giant slip and slide down a hill.
There were some pretty extreme obstacles. Our first obstacle, the one pictured above, was tough. Although we were warned to wear long pants, I decided to wear shorts. BIG MISTAKE! I was left with some pretty nasty rope burns on my calves.
Other extreme obstacles include a giant ice tub we had to wade through, a couple of pools of mud we had to crawl about and the last obstacle, a 20 foot wall climb followed by a very gross trek through thick, sticky mud.
It took the team almost 2 hours to complete the course. We felt quite accomplished when the run was complete. I did capture about 1 hour and a half on a GoPro. Perhaps, if time permits, I’ll be able to get some of the best footage.
Thankfully, there was food and showers (although not warm as promised) and entertainment to cap off our muddy run. I want to thank our little crowd of supporters. Some of our coworkers came to cheer us on, witness the spectacle and take photos (thanks for embellishing this post!). So, thank you!
Before I left the 13th Street Winery property, I visited their little bakery shop and picked up a few of their amazing butter tarts. THE BEST I’VE EVER HAD! I also picked up a couple of bottles of their Burger Blend, a red wine I’ve seen advertised. I really enjoyed the first bottle. I do think it would go great with burgers, but I enjoyed a glass (or two) just on its own.
Small disclaimer: This event was all about team building with my coworkers, although this post doesn’t really reflect that. Not everyone is a fan of being on the internet, so in respect to them, I posted photos of me.

I’ve really stepped up my game for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Step Challenge. I’ve changed my daily step goal from my usual 10,000 steps a day to 15,000 steps a day for the month of June. But… since my calves are burning, I’m going to take things a bit slower this week with lots of rest.
