Running with your dog can be fun for you and your pooch. Before you head out for your first run, make sure that you will both have a safe run. Here are my top 5 tips on running with your dog.
My first vlog, here we go…
1. Be kind to your dog
Don’t go running when it’s too hot, the pavement could be too hot for your dog’s feet. He will also require a great amount of water. Also, don’t pull or drag your dog, he should want to run with you.
2. Be kind to your neighbours
Bring poop bags along and pick up after your dog. When running with my dog, I like to pick a route where I know there are garbage cans along the way.
3. Start Slow
Just like you need to train for longer distances, you dog needs to be trained to run with you. Start with shorter distances and assess your dog’s ability then build towards longer distances.
4. Run Hands Free
I don’t like running while holding on to something. To run hands free loop the leash through the handle, step inside, and bring it to your waist.
5. Be Unpredictable
You should be leading the run, not your dog. Easier said then done, but if you change directions often or change your pace from fast to slow, to fast again, you dog will eventually get the hint and start following you.
Running with your dog should be a fun experience for the both of you, so have fun and stay active together.
