To start off, I have to state that Julie and I agree that this Iron Girl Sprint Triathlon in Grimsby was our FAVORITE. RACE. EVER! We had so much fun and so grateful we did this race together.
We started swimming almost a year ago to get up to speed for our first triathlon. Neither of us knew how to do the front crawl. We both had to buy bikes. Running was all we had. So, we’ve come a long way to compete in our first triathlon. It’s our way of saying goodbye 30’s and ushering in our 40’s.
Here is how the Iron Girl Triathlon Sprint went:
Swimming is probably my weakest of the three disciplines. Surprisingly, the 500 m swim was my best event out of the three sports during Iron Girl. I can’t believe it. During the Try-A-Tri a few weeks ago, swimming was very difficult and I struggled through it. But, on August 7, the water was a bit warmer, the waves were cross wise, not hitting us directly head on, therefore it was easier. I was hoping to finish in 14 to 15 minutes, yet, I managed to finish in an impressive (for me) 11:23.
For Julie, this was probably her weakest of the three disciplines too, yet she also managed to surprise herself with a 15:06 min finish. She was hoping for 16 – 18. Here is a little foreshadowing, but I think I beat Julie in this triathlon because of the swimming.
Biking is where Julie truly shined during the triathlon. She did a lot of catching up to me on this leg. She was aiming for a 50 min – 20 km bike ride, she finished 3 min early with a 47:20. I was right on target with 50:02 min. I think my hybrid bike was a limiting factor for me. It’s what I have and what I chose to buy. Perhaps I can look at renting a road bike for races? I think we did well in the cycling, but I think we both agree we could have trained harder too.
I kept waiting for Julie to pass me on the bike course. I kept my eye out for her and he almost did…
Even though Julie and I classify ourselves as runners, I think this was the hardest of the three sports. At this point, most of our energy was drained and our legs felt super heavy from biking. I think we both did well overall on the run, but not fantastic. We were on target from our prediction, however, we were hoping to exceed our expectations for the run. It was a strong performance and we were not disappointed.
On the run course, I was again waiting for Julie to pass me. I had given it my all, but I couldn’t go any faster. If she passed me in the running, I was going to cheer her on and congratulate her. The funny thing is, Julie was in the same boat. She knew I was ahead, she gave it her all too and just couldn’t give anymore.
The goal was to finish under 1 hour: 45 min, and we both exceeded those goals by finishing in 1:33:59 (Lucie) & 1:37:35 (Julie), which places us 258 & 327 overall out of 715 competitors. I was aiming for the top third, and I almost made it. Placing at the bottom of the top half is a great place for us to start! It was such a great experience. We both enjoyed it so much and want to do more triathlons.
I think we both agree that we need to do more sprint triathlons before we move on to more challenging ones such as an Olympic distance Tri. At least now we know what we need to work on for the next one.
I can’t speak for Julie, but I know I’m done with triathlons for this summer. I have 2 more races on my race calendar but they are both 5 km runs and that’s it for this year. Not sure what 2017 holds for me yet!
