The Peachbud 1o Km race was my third race of the year and my second 10 km of the year. Actually, it’s my second 10 km race ever! After training for 8 weeks, I was well rewarded with a very successful race and a brand new P.R.
Before the Race
This was my first evening run. I was very unsure how to get ready. I’m definitely a morning person. Most of my training happens during my lunch hour, 3 times a week, or my long runs are in the mornings on Saturday or Sunday. I had to work a full day as usual. I ate a normal workday lunch and packed along my evening meal with me as well. I had a pasta dish that I ate 3 hours before my race. I also sipped on Powerade and water all afternoon to make sure I was properly hydrated.
I like to arrive at the race location at least 1.5 hours in advance so I have time to park, sign in and get my race kit. My husband and my son came along for support and I was very happy. It was threatening rain, so I packed my iPhone into my Avantree Track Pouch because it’s more water-resistant than my Belkin Clip-Fit.
I popped a few GU Chomps for extra energy 15 minutes before the race and I popped in a few at around the 5 km mark as well to keep me sustained till the end of the race.
Since there was road construction in Grimsby, they altered the course. The 10 km was 2 loops of the 5 Km route. It took us downtown this scenic little town which was nice. There were many residents sitting outside cheering us on. The fire fighters were also present with their trucks to cool us off with a sprinkling hose.
Here I am at just starting my the 10 km race, luckily the rain held off for the full 10 km.
Well, running an evening race was interesting. I did very well with a brand new 10 km P.R. of 57:22. I have to admit that I prefer morning races though. The course was scenic, with the Niagara Escarpment as a back drop. This course had more hills than I’m used to. I definitely need to incorporate more hills training in my next training plan. I think that’s my last 10 km race for this year. I have maybe two more 5 km races scheduled before this year wraps up!
