Bike, Swim Run! It’s official, Julie (my identical twin sister) and I have signed up for Iron Girl Canada. OK, well, we officially signed up the day registration opened online, back in December, but I never mentioned the fact that we were officially signed up. The Iron Girl in Grimsby, Ontario is a triathlon sprint and also less then 6 months away.
This will be our first Triathlon and it’s our way of saying goodbye to our 3o’s and ushering in our 40’s together. I can’t think of a better way for the two of us celebrate together. The event happens August 7th in Grimsby. It’s one of two Canadian Iron Girl locations, the other one being in Vancouver B.C. It’s really exciting to think that it’s only a 15 minute drive away. This particular race consists of 500 meter swim, 20 km bike ride and a 5 km run.
Official training for the Iron Girl hasn’t started yet, but Julie and I will be following the Athleta Iron Girl Training Plan. This 12 week program will see us starting our training in mid-May. You can expect some training posts from the both of us to be a weekly feature as well.
Just because the official triathlon training hasn’t started, it doesn’t mean that Julie and I are sitting around doing nothing. We are both working hard at sharpening our swimming skills as well as building our swimming endurance. It turns out that we both really enjoy swimming! As well, Julie started training for her second 1/2 marathon this week.
Neither Julie or I have started biking yet. We both have the same challenge; we need a good road bike. I started shopping around but it’s difficult to know what to buy when this sport is relatively unknown to us. It’s not like swimming where the cost of investing in a new bathing suite is relatively low. The prices of bikes ranges from $500 to $3000 (yikes!). I want to make sure I make a good investment. I also want to be able to use this bike for family bike rides in the future. Lots of research will be going in to this! Any suggestions from triathletes? I’d welcome some input. At those kind of prices, I might have to justify the purchase and start tri-ing more often!
