I can’t believe I’m sitting down writing about Road to Iron Girl Chronicle Week 6 already. I’m right in the thick of training and I’m really feeling the groove now.
Last week, I talked about my struggles with getting back to running and an active lifestyle since having a baby. This week I’m telling you quite the opposite. I had an amazing week of training.
I only learned to swim about 2 years ago. It’s the scariest part of the triathlon for me (but I think many feel this way too), so I’m really working on improving my technique and endurance. Up until this week, I’ve only been able to swim once a week, but I’m now going to be able to fit in two swim workouts starting next week!
This week, I felt especially strong in my swim training. I’ve been slowly increasing my number of lengths since I got in the pool a few weeks ago. I pushed myself this week, yet I felt great the entire time, breathing and all!
The lesson I learned at Iron Girl in 2016 is that I hadn’t practiced running after biking enough. This training cycle I decided that I would do more “brick” training. So far, this has been going well for me. It’s getting easier. Next week I need to start cycling and running longer distances.
If you want to run faster, you have to push harder. And I’ve done just that. I’m starting to see the effects of my hill sprints and interval training as well. Although I’m improving, I’m not where I used to be when it comes to speed. Luckily I still have 2 months to work on that.
As mom of a small infant, the lack of sleep really plays a large roll in my athletic performance. I’m attributing my success this week to more sleep since my little guy is now only waking once a night. Other factors that I feel are helping me improve include vitamins and Iron supplements, foam rolling and a couple of rest days.
Here is my training plan for this week:
Monday: Swim sprints: 10 x 50 meters & 2 x 100 m
Tuesday & Wednesday: Rest/Foam Rolling
Thursday: 15 km bike/3 km run
Friday: 1000 m swim
Saturday: 8 x 200 m sprints
That concludes Road to Iron Girl Chronicle Week 6. Come back next week as I countdown to 8 weeks to Iron Girl Grimsby 2018.
