There is nothing more motivating than setting your sights on a big goal, like a first triathlon. Last week, I revealed that my twin sister and I have our sight set on an August 2016 sprint triathlon. Exciting, I know! In order to get to that goal, Julie and I both have a lot of work to do. Although we do run competitively, we need to learn to swim distances and we need to start biking.
Setting Triathlon Goals
This week, I’ve been researching last year’s Iron Girl results in order to determine what our triathlon goals should be for each discipline; swim, bike and run. For this triathlon sprint, we will be swimming 500 meters, biking 20 km and running 5 km. If we want to be somewhere in the middle of the pack (to be realistic), what do we need as a goal for each discipline? Here is what I’m aiming at:
500 meter swim: 12 min
20 km bike: 45 min
5 km run: 28 min
Which would make a total of 1 hour & 25 minutes for the entire race.
As we get closer the event, I will have to refine those goals. Right now, I’m a very slow swimmer. It took me 15 minutes to swim 400 meters. I have no idea how long it will take me to bike 20 kilometers so I’m not sure if 45 minutes as a goal is realistic. However, I know I can run 5 km is about 26 minutes, and I gave myself an extra few minutes in case I’m tired!
As usual, I’m linking up with The Fitness Cheerleader and Running Rachel for #MotivateMe Monday because we all need some motivation to keep going, although I was pretty motivated last week since I had just set my new goal! Let’s see how I’ll do this week.Link up with @fitcheerldr & @RunningRachel for #MotivateMe Monday if you need some motivation! Click To Tweet
Last week my training looked like this:
Monday: 1 hour endurance swim (I’m definitely improving on my technique)
Tuesday: 5 km lunch time run
Wednesday: 15 min stationary bike & Kettle bell lunges and swings
Sunday: 6.5 km run
This week, I’m hoping to accomplish:
Monday: 1 hour endurance swim
Tuesday: 5 km run
Wednesday: 20 min stationary bike & other exercises
Sunday: 5 to 10 km run (with my dog Charlie???)
Anyhow, I hope you have a great week ahead. How do you plan to stay active this week? Your turn, what are your plans this week?
