It was cold out on my run today, but it’s encouraging to see signs of spring everywhere!
Signs of Spring
This pond is part of my regular running loop. I usually come across the common bird species like Canada geese, mallard ducks and swans. Today, however, I was excited to see some new birds in the pond. They are just migratory birds laying over for a rest before they move on their journey, but I was happy to catch sight of them. After consulting my field guides at home, I believe what I saw were common goldeneyes diving in and out of the water, and some redhead ducks.
Other signs of spring spotted this week included many budding trees and daffodils sprouting at the track I use for my lunchtime runs. Spring is right around the corner, I can just feel it!
As a blogger, I often get sent free products or samples to try. This month, I’ve been sent a couple. The first one was biPro, a pure whey protein isolate. I tried the chocolate sample and it really tasted great (I’m quite picky when it comes to protein powder taste and texture). But, since I’m lactose intolerant, I have to take it easy on the protein powders that are based on whey! If it wasn’t the case, this would definitely be a great source of protein for me!
I was also sent a box of Pilots Friend, an organic energy drink. I have to say, I was a bit apprehensive about trying an energy drink since I have never bought or tasted an energy drink before. Since it was organic and filled with natural juices I thought I’d give it a try.
Here is what’s inside Pilots Friends:
Kola Nut extract provides balanced, natural caffeine
Ginger extract, Chokeberry juice and lemon juice promote digestion
Apple juice promotes heart and liver health
Cardamom extract promotes digestion and cardiovascular health
Orange extract offers immune support
Acerola is a source of vitamin C and has anti-aging properties
Black Carrot juice and Quinine extract act as anti-inflammatories
Gentian extract soothes the stomach
One sip of this stuff was enough for me. Honestly, I have enough energy as it is. I really don’t need any extra. I felt jolted (best way to describe it) and I had my best run in a long time after that. It tasted great, but I wouldn’t take any more of this.
However, if you are one that needs/likes energy drinks, perhaps you’d like to try this one as it’s now available in Canada.
Grapes of Wrath
If you didn’t read last Monday’s post, I’ve entered the Grapes of Wrath, which is an obstacle and mud run which benefits the Canadian Cancer Society. Check out the video below of the 2014 race. Looks like fun, but it’s not till June!
Nothing gets you more motivated than a good ol’ fashion step challenge. What started as a test at work for a running app, turned out to be a friendly, but competitive step challenge. I’ve worked hard all week to keep at the top of the leaderboard! I have some competition, which makes it so much fun, but I definitely have to earn that top spot!
