1. 1812 Merlot Cabernet by Palatine Hills
This wine is created by Palatine Hills wineries, in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The 1812 is a reference to the War of 1812, and was made to commemorate the war. I have tasted this wine at the many festivities of the bicentennial of the war of 1812.
2. Chateau des Charmes’s Cabernet Merlot
There is a certain restaurant that I love to go to where I order this Cabernet Merlot wine. This restaurants must have one from a great year. I have tried to buy it in the LCBO (liquor store), but just not quite the same. So, I save this one when my husband and I have a date night!
3. Wayne Gretzky’s no.99 Cabernet Merlot 2013
Yes, the Great One has his own wine label, and one of this three wineries is in Niagara-on-the-Lake. His No. 99 Collection is made up of affordable every day wines. I pick this one again and again. Update: Gretzky is opening his own winery and distillery in Niagara-On-The-Lake. I can’t wait for it to open in Spring of 2017
4. 2013 Guilty Men Red by Malivoire wines
This is one of my newest discoveries that became a fast favorite. I bought it on a whim. This great wine is a blend of different varieties of red wines. It’s sure to please many tastes.
5. Trius Red, 2012
And finally, I saved the best for last. This is the wine I would get all the time if it were not for the price. It’s more expensive than the others mentioned her, but that’s because as far as taste goes, it stands out above the others in my opinion. Because of its price, I would save this one for special occasions, however, this is also what I am drinking tonight!
My list has been compiled with my experience with wines. There are so many local wineries that I have not yet tried. My list is sure to evolve year by year, but at this moment, this is my top 5 red wines. If you are choosing a red wine and spot one of these 5 great Niagara wines, think about trying them out. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
