My identical twin sister Julie and I live 500 km apart, however, we are training for our first triathlon sprint together in Iron Girl Grimsby this August. We are writing weekly updates of our tri-training on Wednesdays in an 8 week series called Trials & Tribulations of Triathlon Twins.
OK, so I missed my usual Wednesday post, and now it’s Thursday night, but I was on vacation and opted on family fun instead of blogging!
Even thought I was on vacation, didn’t mean I was totally off my training. I didn’t follow my plan at all (heck, I was on vacation) but I still got lots of biking, some swimming in, but hardly any running at all.
Starting from last Thursday, I snuck in a lunch time 5 km run on my last day of work before vacation! I took 3 days off of working out to enjoy the Canada day long weekend, where my little family traveled to Stratford (Ontario) to catch the festivities then on Sunday, we made our way further up north to Sudbury to visit my twin sister.
Brick with a Twist
On Monday, I missed my tri clinic since I was up in Sudbury. It was supposed to be Brick night. (A brick is a combination of swim/bike, bike/run or swim/run). Instead, Julie, her two boys, our very good friend Nancy, her three kids, my son and I went for a 7 km bike ride to the beach. We picnicked there for a few hours. Julie and I practice some open water swim. But first, we had to take the obligatory selfie. We both agreed that open water swims are not easy because of the waves.
Ladies’ Night At the Bike Club
After dinner, Julie took Nancy and I mountain biking at the local bike club for Ladies night. The same event she talked about last week. I borrowed Julie’s Mountain bike, while Julie borrowed her son’s. I’ve never done any trail riding like that before but I was initiated quite quickly. We zoomed and zigzagged up and down gnarly hills. We learned how to climb uphill on some of Sudbury’s most bumpy granite. Julie and I even walked up and down some of the more advanced hills. We are still working on our mountain biking skills. Julie’s sons just think we are two chickens! Nancy was much more braver and skilled and took on the challenges like a pro. Julie is lucky to have a great friend like Nancy so close by to do fun physical activities with!
On Tuesday morning, my family and I traveled to Lake Nipissing to visit my mom who had rented a cottage. I didn’t get to do much training the next few days but I did do some walking and some swimming in the pool.
Now that I’m back from vacation and gained 6 pounds from all the over indulging, I’m going to get more serious about my training and my nutrition. Hello, there is only 4 weeks left and I’m starting to feel panic.
I started things right today with an early 5 km run and a 750 m swim this evening. My husband and I have cleaned up are eating. We will be following the P90X3 meal plan for the next 4 weeks. Thanks for the support on this Chris! (On a side note, it’s my first day of cleaning up my diet and I’m already day dreaming of perogies and sour cream.) I’m going to dust off that Triathlon training plan that I thought I’d be using and go from there!
Yes, I’m very lucky to have Nancy around Lucie! It was also fun to get to bike/swim with Lucie this week as well. I wasn’t on vacation this week, and I was busy getting ahead of Lucie with my training.
On Monday of last week, I did a 6 km trail run. Wednesday, I road my road bike on my lunch hour. Friday, I ran 4 km at lunch and stopped for a dip at the beach on the University Campus. On Canada Day, I participated in a 10 km race.
I didn’t slow down so far this week either. I did 20 km on my road bike, followed by a 1 km run on Tuesday and on Wednesday, I did an interval workout; 8 x 200 m sprints.
That concludes this week’s episode of triathlon twins. Tune in next Wednesday when Julie and I come to terms with the fact that we only have 3 weeks to go! Yikes!
