The Pan Am Games are coming to Toronto starting July 10 so it’s just a few weeks away. It’s supposed to be the biggest game yet and the excitement over the games is just beginning. Although the main events are in Toronto, many events will be hosted by cities across Ontario. My
City, neighborhood, backyard is hosting the rowing events at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Centre on Martindale Pond. I call it my backyard because it’s probably only 500 m away, and one of the locations I use for trail running or walking my dog.
The City of St.Catharines has this to say about the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Centre and the 2015 Pan Am Games
Rated as a world-class rowing course by the International Rowing Federation (FISA), the Henley will host 14 men’s and women’s competitions in several disciplines, such as single, double and quadruple sculls; coxless pair and four; and eight with coxswain.
So, while out on my run on Saturday, I decided to photograph the areas that will be bringing the Americas to St. Catharines and show off this World Class Rowing Course!
If I run to Henley Island taking the road, it about 1 km, but it’s way shorter if I take the back trails. Flags are lining the streets, highlighting the event and all the great things that #OurHomeStC has to offer.
Below is a view of part of Henley Island from the top of the hill. There were dragon boat races that particular morning.
It’s quite exciting to think that in July, this island will be covered with people from all over North, Central and South America. It’s exciting, but also, as a resident, a bit annoying. Traffic is going to be crazy as there are only 2 points of entry into the Port Dalhousie community! That part I’m not looking forward to.
About 2 kilometers down Main Street, we have the Grand Stands for viewing at the finish line. It’s empty now, but it will be packed come the Pan Am games! I’m going to try and come back during the games (probably on my usual run) and take photos of the action.
After the Port Place disaster (which I’m not going to go into details in this post), it’s nice to see some business establishing in this little district! Hopefully Balzac’s will be open in time for the Pan Am games!
Anyhow, I live an a beautiful little community with many active people! I’m proud that we will be hosting the Rowing events for the PanAm 2015 games. I will return once the games are in full swing to share with you some of the excitement! Until then! Viva Pan Am! Will you be watching the Pan Am/Parapan Am games? I sure will! My favorite events are definitely the Track event! Which events are your favorites?
