The technology behind wearables is ever-changing. It’s hard to keep track of what’s out there. On this post, I’m checking out what’s new in wearable technology, just in time for Christmas.
I’m very excited to hear that Garmin now offers a wearable for kids called Vivofit kids. This wearable will track your kids steps, sleep and even if they get their recommended 60 min of activity a day. Parents can assign chores and even handout virtual rewards (coins).
I can see this watch being fun for the whole household by setting some family challenges. Not only is this watch swim friendly, but what’s amazing is that it features 1 whole year of battery life. No recharging!
The vivofit kids comes in fun bright kid friendly colours (I especially love it in Digi Camo) and they are reasonably priced at $99.99 CAD.
I love my Vivoactive smartwatch but this year Garmin has a newer version. It has a built in Heart Monitor and it’s called Vivoactive HR. It looks a bit different, but this smartwatch has a similar colour touchscreen display. Not only can you receive smart notifications like the VivoActive, you can also get smart coaching from Garmin Connect. It also has a similar 8 day battery life, which I think is a fantastic feature of the Vivoactive family of watches.
It looks like the heartrate monitor isn’t the only new feature of this watch. You can also track your swimming, golfing, rowing and skiing.
This newest heart rate smartwatch comes at a price of 329.99 CAD, which is only $30 more than the VivoActive, so if you are looking for a good multisport watch, definitely go for this one.Just in time for Christmas, find out what's new in Wearable Technology! Click To Tweet
Pebble 2 with Heart Rate
I was going to mention the Pebble 2 with Heart Rate, but I’m very sad to inform you that Pebble has shut down. When doing my research, I found this following statement dated December 7:
due to various factors—Pebble is no longer able to operate as an independent entity. We have made the tough decision to shut down the company and no longer manufacture Pebble devices.
Awe, that’s really too bad. I think this company had some great ideas!
TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music + Headphones
The TomTom Spark 3 comes in several versions, but I like the version that comes with the heart monitor and the music and I felt it was worth a mention because it has great features and is at an affordable price of $319.99. For that price, you get a multisport watch that tracks your workouts, maps your routes, monitors your heart rate and you can leave your smartphone behind. And, this watch also plays music and holds up to 500 songs. What? I’d love for the VivoActive or the new Vivoactive HR to come with a built-in music app like the TomTom Spark 3.
The only thing that really bugs me about this watch is that it’s not a touch screen. I find the touch screen so easy to navigate. The navigation button, for me, is a little annoying. My identical twin sister Julie has a TomTom and she loves it.
iWatch generation 2
I can’t write this post without mentioning the wearable I’m truly envious about, the newest version of the iWatch. Although I totally want this watch, it’s not on my Christmas list this year since my Vivoactive watch meets all my needs and I don’t NEED this watch, I just want it!
I wasn’t thrilled that the first generation iWatch wasn’t waterproof. That was the biggest reason I opted for the Vivoactive as opposed the iWatch, other than the price tag. Another reason was that the first generation didn’t have a standalone GPS tracker with the watch. They got it right for the second generation however and that’s why it’s back on my I WANT IT list.
I was however told by a running friend of mine who has the second generation iWatch that the GPS on the watch only works with the Nike Running app. Hopefully with time, more apps will run with the GPS.
With a price tag starting at $489, this watch is more of an investment than other watches, but with all the smartwatch features, I think the second generation iWatch is a total winner!
Tell me, what’s your favorite wearable? What does it track? What features are important for you when you look at wearable technology?
